What To Wear When Coloring?

What to wear when coloring..? Funny or not, but the color of your top might make or break all your coloring efforts. And I always wear a particular type of clothing when coloring or painting. Why? Simply because of the light reflection.

Well, this article will be relevant for those artists who are very serious about coloring. If you just like to get a cuppa and color away, then skip this one.

What to wear – colors to avoid

There are two types of colors: bright and neutral. Brights reflect sunlight or electric light off to the nearest surface, whic in our case is your coloring page. For example, if you wear a pink top, your coloring page will have a pink tint all over it. This will pollute your color sense and throw off all your color mixing efforts. Same goes to other bright colors.

The best colors to wear

So if you want to be more professional when coloring ( 😉 ) then wear only neutral tops in colors like black, grey, and nude.

Black color is important when doing art, because it absorbs the light instead of reflecting it on paper. Black will not give any tint or shading to your white coloring page.

I know, neutral colors are not the funnest ones to wear, but hey, you can have a whole color party on your coloring page 🙂 And you can still have a small splash of color on your top, it doesn’t have to be all plain.

My second requirement for art clothing is that my top is loose (it’s just more comfortable), and it has to have short sleeves so I don’t smudge my colors.

And really, a simple black t-shirt fits all those requirements.

Non Messy Colored Pencils

Many colorists are not comfortable with usual coloring pencils.

There are three reasons for that:

you need to sharpen them often, and it’s messy;
lead breaks all the time, and it’s frustrating;
for adult coloring pages, pencil lead is too wide, so it is hard to fill in details.

If you like colored pencils but rather avoid annoying moments, consider these:

Non Messy Coloring Pencils

This is the ultimate goodbye to ever lost pencil sharpener, prickly wooden bits, and staining dust all over the desk and carpet.

Once the colored lead ran out, you can put in normal 0.7 lead, and use it as a regular mechanical pencil. Although, colored leads are easy to find on Amazon.

The most functional colored pencil

If you travel or just like compact things with maximum functionality, this 8 in 1 pencil is even better. It is by Pentel, and I really like their art materials for durability and just high quality. This mechanical colored pencil has 8 color leads inside. They are 2mm, so are great for coloring even thin pages, they won’t tear through the thin paper.

Leads are waxy and colors are bold. Also, you don’t have to replace the leads with Pentel brand when they run out, just find some cheaper once, for example, Crayola sells 2mm leads.

Useful companion

Since these pencils have very thin lead, colors are mixed best with a blender.

But this one is not necessary at all. I can never be bothered with these, and just use my finger, because I try to keep my art materials bag as compact and functional as possible ( I get destructed if there are too many things in my art bag, it prevents me from starting my piece, and I end up spending all my time on trying all materials and dreaming of what I would want to add to my collection etc.) So, simplicity is key, if I want to enjoy drawing/coloring/painting. It’s a good skill to be inventive and just use materials that you already have. Some people use cotton buds for blending colors.

Coloring Page Example: Coloring With Dark Colors

Not everyone likes bright pink and lemon yellow colors.

Most coloring pages are “attacked” with brightest pencils that can be found in colorist’s collection.

It is possible to get an interesting looking picture even if using dark or dull colors. The key is to balance dark/dull color with 10-20% of bright color.

In the example below I have used ocher yellow to add some contrast. Even though ocher yellow is a color of dry grass, it still looked bright compared to other colors in the palette. Dark colors used are Prussian blue (dark greenish blue used for uniforms in old days), and two different shades of brown.

At the picture below, you can see how stars are almost glowing on dark background. Contrast is the key.
